How E-commerce sites are instrumental in increasing product sales

It is no longer necessary to go to shops for buying goods of your choice. Buying could be done from your workplace or from the comfort of your home. Leading marketers and sellers have their own websites through which they sell their products or services online to willing customers. It is a common practice now-a-days to do ticketing and hotel bookings online. You are spared the trouble of having to stand in a queue for long hours.

Apart from dedicated websites that belong to a single manufacturer, or a service providers or a seller, there are sites that sell multiple variety of products. These are like a huge online departmental store offering several categories of products like apparels, household appliances, mobile handsets, electronic and electrical goods, books, office automations items, sports goods, fitness equipments, cameras, music systems, and so on. There are hardly any goods that these sites do not sell. When we speak of e-commerce sites we normally mean online B2C (business to consumer) websites. Through these sites an organization sells goods or services to end users or ultimate consumers. There are certain categories of products that are sold by one business house to another. These products are classified as intermediary products and their online trading is classified as B2B (business to business). Though there are websites that only cater to B2B segment, most e-commerce sites are of B2C type.

E-commerce eBay is a typical B2C website that allows you to buy any item of your choice from among an enormous list. And for every item category there is a choice of multiple brands. It is comparable to an actual departmental store that maintains socks of various brands for any particular product. For example in mobile phones you could choose among Nokia, Samsung, Sony, Motorola, LG and so on. Similarly for wrist watches a selection could be made among Rolex, Tissot, Tag Heuer, Armani, Casio, Titan and so on.

Benefits of buying from E-commerce sites

Product description – For the benefit of buyers a short description is given alongside each product. Detailed specifications are also provided in certain cases. These short descriptions act as buying guide for online shoppers. Also product ratings and customer reviews are given that help in making buying decisions.

Price – Price of products is one of the most striking benefits of making use of e-commerce websites for buying. Normally, prices offered on these sites are lower as compared to their marked price. The reason for this is that there are no intermediaries between the seller and the buyer. Under normal circumstances a product transfers three or four intermediate levels before reaching an end-user, with each intermediary keeping a margin. As these levels are totally removed in online trading, price benefit goes to end-users. This discount rate increases with bulk purchase.

Delivery and payment – Delivery and payment are other considerations in favour of online transactions. Usually, payments are done on delivery. ‘Cash on delivery’ is a common practice in this type of trade. This is beneficial for both buyer and seller: a purchaser pays on receiving his good, while a seller gets to know about an end-user’s place of work or stay. Door delivery is convenient especially for bulky or heavy items. The responsibility of delivery lies entirely with the seller. If any product is found to be defective or unsatisfactory the same might be returned.

For all these benefits, product sales increase through on-line trading or e-commerce. This is a growing trend and the range of products sold through these sites getting diversified with each passing day.
